"I'm building a new deck. Do I have to sand the wood before I apply a deck coating?"

Ask The Experts

"My old deck finish weathered away and left the deck dull gray. What can I do to restore a natural wood appearance?"

The deck should be washed using a detergent/bleach combination. A good recipe is one gallon of household bleach; 4 gallons water and 16 oz. of TSP (A strong detergent!). This solution costs less than $1.00/gallon. Prewet the deck and spray or brush on the detergent/bleach mixture. Work in with a stiff brush, let sit 15-20 minutes and rinse. Using a power washer with 500 psi pressure will leave a much brighter deck than just rinsing with a hose. Allow the deck to dry for three DRY days. Apply a QUALITY deck finish that has good UV protection---such as Sikkens SRD or Benjamin Moore's Deck & Siding Finish, available at Marquette WP & Paint!! Your deck will look fantastic!!!!!
